Save the Shoal Creek bike/ped path (Lamar-34th St)

Since 2021, the protected bike-pedestrian path on Shoal Creek Blvd between Lamar & 34th St has provided a safe connection for countless people walking and bicycling.

This includes children and families at nearby St Andrew’s School, and has been a critical link in the nine-mile Shoal Creek Trail from Lady Bird Lake to Hwy 183.

Unfortunately, the City plans to remove the current path and force people on bicycles to mix with vehicles.

This is despite strong public support - and the City’s own plans - in favor of continuous protected facilities on this street. According to the City’s own survey, for the street’s eastern span (Lamar Blvd to Shoal Creek trailhead), 376 respondents supported an on-street bike-ped protected path, versus 190 who supported no protection for bicycles. For the western span (Shoal Creek trailhead to 34th St), 509 respondents supported either a protected bike-ped path or an off-street park trail, versus 85 who supported no protection. In addition, the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP) calls for all ages and abilities bicycle facilities and complete sidewalks along this stretch. TPW should follow through on this strong direction from the community and the City.

Tell the City of Austin: “I want on-street protection or a safe park trail for people walking & bicycling for the ENTIRE length of Shoal Creek between Lamar & 34th St. I OPPOSE unprotected bicycle/pedestrian facilities.”
