Holler for a streets redo in West Campus

West Campus — bordered by N Lamar, Guadalupe, W MLK, and 30th St — is one of Austin’s walkable, bikeable meccas. While the area featured some of Austin’s highest-quality transportation options — including the CapMetro Rapid lines, the Rio Grande protected bike lanes, and many wide sidewalks — there’s still considerable room for improvement.

Transportation and Public Works is currently asking the public what transportation improvements folks want to see in West Campus. This is a golden opportunity to elevate West Campus’s gold (silver?) transportation status still higher, so get to the survey, y’all, before the December deadline.

Feedback you may want to consider giving:

  1. Implement a road diet on MLK and add protected bike lanes to improve safety, comfort, and access to local destinations.

  2. Include protected bike lanes on Guadalupe as part of the Project Connect transit mall.

  3. Convert the Nueces and San Antonio one-way streets to two-way to maximize access, navigability, and safety.

  4. On 24th Street, add protected bike lanes in both directions.

  5. Allow left turns at N Lamar when headed eastbound on 24th St to cut down on traffic in West Campus.

  6. Add a midblock pedestrian crossing at Longview Street and N Lamar to create a safer, more pleasant connection between West Campus and the Shoal Creek Trail.
